The Production & Logistics (P&L) chapter of Ekonomika Alumni invites you to their new seminar discussing Network Design, on May 16 in Leuven.

Network Design is still a key topic on the agenda of companies that trade off cost with service level. Nevertheless, these business problems are becoming more challenging when we account for a wide range of external variables like access to supply, the tax and regulatory context or the market capabilities of particular regions. Network Design is a key enabler for an effective customer-centric business strategy. In this “Back-to-Basics” seminar, we invite three speakers to elaborate on the drivers, objectives and challenges within their specific operating context.

Bridgestone, the world’s largest tyre and rubber company, has its EMEA head office located in Brussels and their proving ground & technical centre in Rome. In addition, they have have 15 tyre plants throughout EMEA along with 10 regional head offices. Currently, Bridgestone’s business strategy is focused on the expansion of its product and service portfolio into new areas, evolving from a premium tyre manufacturer to a mobility solutions provider. In this dynamic environment, the Supply Chain department is continuously adapting its organization, systems and logistics network. Logistics design studies are requested to ensure the quality of the offered services, cost efficiencies and inventory levels.

BAM Mat is part of BAM Belgium and centralizes the material supply for different associations of the BAM Group at their workshops in Ghent, Sint-Truiden and Luik. These workshops supply the construction companies with services and materials (>10.000 SKUs) to successfully execute construction projects. BAM decided to centralize their activities to a single greenfield location in Hannuit to better accommodate for the growing expectations towards the future. In this way, BAM wants to transform its business model from a leasing company into a real service provider. The new location offers better reachability which will positively impact delivery lead times and transportation costs. They will leverage the centralization of their activities to streamline their processes and to strengthen the collaboration between business units.

Sarah Dewilde currently works at INSEAD’s Humanitarian Research Group. During her studies, she collaborated with KU Leuven’s Access-to-Medicines Research Center in an award winning research project on vaccine supply chain redesign in Madagascar. Each year, Madagascar’s rainy season isolates several regions and interrupts their vaccine availability for about five months. This research aims to improve the equity in terms of immunization coverage between rainy-season affected areas and non-rainy-season affected areas. Sarah will elaborate on the set of scenarios, which differ in (1) the frequency of in-country deliveries, (2) the number of operational fridges in the rainy season affected areas, and (3) the allocated volumes to the rainy season affected areas, and on the trade-offs in the best-case scenarios.
