27/03/2019 - P&L visit: Lineas shunting yard

Production & Logistics
Visit: Lineas Shunting Yard
- Wednesday, March 27 -
Dear alumnus,

The Production & Logistics (P&L) chapter of Ekonomika Alumni invites you to their visit at Lineas, on March 27 in Antwerpen.

The transportation of goods is of key importance for the functioning of the Global Economy. Forecasts show that the growth of transportation will be at least as large as the growth of the Global Economy, resulting in an increase of 50% between now and 2050. Land transportation is mainly done via road today. It will be a challenge to keep on organizing land transportation as it is done today. The impact on both the economy (congestion) and the ecology (CO2 emissions) will be significant and may well cause a standstill in the future. Therefore it is very important to explore alternative modes such as intermodal rail transportation. During our visit at Lineas two speakers will share their experience in this field.

Peter Lagey is Manager of Multimodaal.Vlaanderen, an initiative taken by the Flemish Government in 2017 with the mission to create a real mental shift towards the modal shift from road to other transport modes. Starting from the sense of urgency, Peter will provide an overview of the challenges for both rail and inland navigation and share experiences and best practices since the start in September 2017.

Matthias Herrebosch is Director Commercial Operations of Lineas. Matthias will provide an overview of the state of intermodal rail transportation in Europe. Starting from an overall industry overview he will outline how Lineas is implementing an entrepreneurial and innovative strategy which provides the opportunities for rail services to be competitive versus road transportation from a cost and service perspective. His presentation will enable shippers to do a cultural and operational mindshift to intermodal transportation.

As this seminar is organized at the shunting yard of Antwerpen-Noord, there will be a guided visit of the railway operations. This includes a visit of the control center and the shunting hill, which are parts of the key infrastructure to compose freight train combinations.

We hope to see you there!
